Portsmouth 0 - 1 Bournemouth Ladies
HAMPSHIRE FA COUNTY CUP.
Portsmouth Ladies FC Vs AFC Bournemouth Ladies.
Portsmouth Ladies hosted the Cherries in the semi finals of the County cup on sunday. The two teams met last year in the final only for the premiere league team to thump the cherries 10-0. This year saw the two teams meet earlier than expected in the competition.
Bournemouth arrived at Fareham FC stadium with the belief that they could cause an upset at their 'new' southcoast rivals.
The game started in high spirits, with bournemouth taking the game to the high flying s.premiere team. However, Pompey didn't take long to get a hold on the game and pressure the cherries with some good work through the middle and wide channels. Bournemouth remained resiliant throughout the first half and limited Portsmouth to one or two half chances, which were dealt with comfortably by Racheal Grierson and Sam Howarth at centre half. The cherries had several opportunities to catch Portsmouth on the break, with Lindsey Roe and Lisa Langrish linking up well with Michelle keehan in the middle only for Pompey to flood back in numbers to break up the play.. Both teams worked tirelessly until the break, with manager Shaun Langrish extremely pleased with a 0-0 at healf time.
Some wise words at half time gave Bournemouth the belief that they were well within reach of overcomming their county rivals.
After the restart Pompey drove forward for the opener, but were becoming increasingly frustrated with the Cherries back four as they seemed to deal with everything that was thrown at them. Portsmouth appeared to have exhausted all their resources when Clare Heydon picked out Kirstey Bell on the flank, bell found Langrish in the middle who flicked on to Roe on the left. Roe accelerated forward to the edge of the eighteen where some typical 'Lucky' trickery saw her spin through two players and cross, only Justine Loughton had anntiscipated the cross ball and couldnt quite reach to finish.
The game opened up in the latre stages with the result looking like it could go either way. Portsmouth showed signs of their premiere league status with some fine pass and move play at pace, but Bournemouth fought back with some good football of their own.
It was in the 89th minute that the cherries won a corner from a deflected free kick. Roe put the ball down quickly and played it short to Keehan who whipped a fine ball in to the back post; Pompey seemed to be caught off guard as skipper Lisa Langrish flew in with an outstanding diving header to take the MIGHTY CHERRIES to the cup final and dump cup holders Portsmouth LFC OUT!
The Cherries Ladies will play their FA County Cup Final at Havant & Waterlooville's stadium in March.
