| But first the side had a mid-week
friendly against the army at aldershot proved a valuable
test for the cherries who faced a battle away at swindon
this weekend.
Army 0 - 5 AFCB Ladies
The army fielded a strong and fit team as always, but
it was the cherries who came out on top with a tremendous
performance of attacking football, firering in 5 goals
against an experienced army line up. Kirsty Bell, Lisa
Langrish, Lindsey Roe, Janie Morgan and Gillian Neill all
finding the net.
So onto the game at Swindon.
Much of the first half was spent being taunted and
jeered by both opposing players and those on the sideline,
and it was Swindon who took the opportunity to net the
only
goal of the first half after some indecision let the
Robins in on goal.
HT 1 - 0
Some positive words from the gaffa at half time helped
calm the rattled cherries and reinforce the discipline
needed to rise above such unsporting tactical play. It
wasn't long before AFCB found their feet and started
moving the ball around on their own terms. Janie Morgan
received the ball on 20yards, and with a quick look up
placed the ball as she always does, in the top right.
This gave the cherries the upper hand, and with Swindon
now looking rocked the game opened up for the travelling
side. Kirsty Bell popping up to fire home a perfect ball
in from the right. With Swindon now firmly pinned back and
Sam Howarth pulling tight the back four AFCB could now
push on with Lisa Langrish and Lindsey Roe causing lots of
problems in the Swindon defensive third. Roe was brought
down for the fourth time winning a free kick in a great
position 25 yards out. After an array of missed free kicks
the previous week, only Langrish was willing to stand up
to task; confidently drilling the ball low into the bottom
right corner, leaving Robins keeper no chance.
With little time remaining, Roe was able to regain some
satisfaction (after the same fixture last year saw her
disgracefully challenged from behind and sidelined for 10
weeks.) when Bell layed the ball back for her to half
volley into the roof of the net.
FT 1- 4
Not the most attractive game of football, but one that
required self discipline and togetherness to take home the
3 points.
